PROBING 100 AU INTERGALACTIC Mg ii ABSORBING ‘‘CLOUDLETS’’ WITH QUASAR MICROLENSING
نویسنده
چکیده
Intergalactic Mg ii absorbers are known to have structures down to scales 10 pc, and there are now indications that they may be fragmented on scalesP10 2.5 pc according to Hao and coworkers. When a lensed quasar is microlensed, the microimages of the quasar experience creation, destruction, distortion, and drastic astrometric changes during caustic crossings. I show that quasar microlensing can effectively probe Mg ii and other absorption ‘‘cloudlets’’ with sizes 10 4.0 to 10 2.0 pc by inducing significant spectral variability on timescales of months to years. With numerical simulations, I demonstrate the feasibility of applying this method to Q2237+0305, and I show that highresolution spectra of this quasar in the near futurewould provide a clear test of the existence of suchmetal-line absorbing ‘‘cloudlets.’’ Subject headinggs: gravitational lensing — intergalactic medium — quasars: absorption lines

Absorbing “Cloudlets” with Quasar Microlensing
Intergalactic Mg II absorbers are known to have structures down to scales ∼ 10pc, and there are now indications that they may be fragmented on scales . 10pc (Hao et al., astro-ph/0612409). I show that quasar microlensing can effectively probe Mg II and other absorption “cloudlets” with sizes ∼ 10 − 10pc by inducing significant spectral variability on the timescales of months to years. With nume...
متن کاملDirect Observational Test Rules Out Small Mg ii Absorbers
Recent observations suggest the incidence of strong intervening Mg ii absorption systems along the line-of-sight to gamma ray burst (GRB) afterglows is significantly higher than expected from analogous quasar sightlines. One possible explanation is a geometric effect, arising because Mg ii absorbers only partially cover the quasar continuum regions, in which case Mg ii absorbers must be conside...
متن کاملMicrolensing of the Lensed Quasar Sdss0924+0219
We analyze V, I and H band HST images and two seasons of R-band monitoring data for the gravitationally lensed quasar SDSS0924+0219. We clearly see that image D is a point-source image of the quasar at the center of its host galaxy. We can easily track the host galaxy of the quasar close to image D because microlensing has provided a natural coronograph that suppresses the flux of the quasar im...
متن کاملQuasars Probing Quasars Iii: New Clues to Feedback, Quenching, and the Physics of Massive Galaxy Formation
Galaxies hosting z ∼ 2 quasars are the high-z progenitors of today’s massive ‘red-and-dead’ galaxies. With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar can be used to study a foreground quasar’s halo gas in absorption, providing a wealth of information about feedback, quenching, and the physics of massive galaxy formation. We present a Keck/HIRES spectrum of the bright bac...
متن کاملProbing the gravitational Faraday rotation using quasar X-ray microlensing
The effect of gravitational Faraday rotation was predicted in the 1950s, but there is currently no practical method for measuring this effect. Measuring this effect is important because it will provide new evidence for correctness of general relativity, in particular, in the strong field limit. We predict that the observed degree and angle of the X-ray polarization of a cosmologically distant q...
